Bus Stops - Improving the Daily Lives of Commuters

In Syria, we often see people—the elderly, those in wheelchairs, mothers with small children, and daily workers—waiting for buses in the rain or under the scorching sun.  So, we talked to community representatives, community members, and local authorities about installing bus stops to shield commuters from harsh weather conditions - they welcomed the idea. It might seem like a simple thing, but for the many people who rely on public transportation in Syria, especially during the rainy winter and extremely hot summer months, a bus stop can transform their daily experience.

Inclusivity was a cornerstone of the bus stop design. Each bus stop includes a designated area without a seat, allowing individuals in wheelchairs to comfortably wait under the shelter.

Each bus stop features a billboard with general guidelines to promote awareness about proper behavior when using public buses, such as offering your seat to the elderly and not smoking, fostering a respectful and considerate environment for all riders.

This initiative is improving the daily commuting experience of thousands of people, especially the elderly and people with disabilities. The new bus stops represent more than just a place to wait for a bus; they symbolize progress and inclusivity, and demonstrates the power of community collaboration and thoughtful urban planning.

We would like to sincerely thank the Syrian Cross Border Fund, who helped make this project possible. Now, due to this project’s success we have 4 more in progress thanks to AFNS! If you would like to help us have a larger impact on the communities we serve, please consider donating below.
