Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance - Meeting Ibrahim and his wife’s daily needs
2024.
83 year-old Ibrahim lives with his wife in the Ebad Al-Rahman camp, North-West Syria, after being displaced from their hometown of Maasran. He struggled to take care of their needs due to his age. “I no longer have the strength to work and provide for the expenses for me and my wife, especially after we were displaced from our village of Maasran. I left behind my home and my source of livelihood. Because I was unable to work again, I settled in the tent that sheltered us after our displacement.” Though his married children provided him with some help, Ibrahim had to go into debt to access basic necessities including food or medicine.
In cooperation with our partners at Solidar Suisse, we assessed Ibrahim’s needs, he qualified for our Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance program. “The SARD team first visited our camp and assessed our needs and then registered us, after which they distributed electronic vouchers. Every month, $150 is given to us by the team.”
MPCA cash vouchers aim at enabling beneficiaries to meet their basic necessities, whether in terms of food, clothing, medicine, etc. Cash empowers people to make their own decisions based on their needs and situations in a dignified manner. People spend their money in local markets and businesses, stimulating the local economy. “The voucher provided me with the most important need, which is food. We can now diversify our food, whether legumes, vegetables or meat. We can buy what we need for food as well as medicine, for me and my wife. Also, this has reduced the financial burden on my children because each one of them is responsible for his family as well. Now that winter is coming, we will need heating and winter clothing, and vouchers will help us buy them.”
