Shelter Rehabilitation - Haider’s Story After the 2023 Earthquake

April 28th 2024

Living in Azaz, Syria, Haizer and his family’s home was almost entirely destroyed by the February 2023 earthquake that shook northwest Syria. The effects of the earthquake on his home forced him to put up tents as a temporary shelter solution.

After seeing the severe damages to Haider’s home, SARD determined it qualified for its Shelter rehabilitation program. He notes: “SARD visited me and upon seeing the damage to my house, they provided support to rehabilitate it. They reconstructed two rooms, in addition to a bathroom, toilet, and staircase, as well as pouring the floor.”

Haider is retired and lives with his family of 6, he mentions that the rehabilitation he benefited from allowed them to live a more prosperous life. He explains: “After my house was damaged in the earthquake, life became bleak as I lost everything. When SARD visited me and offered support to rehabilitate my house, life changed from despair to hope.”

The 2023 earthquake destroyed or damaged 10, 600 buildings in northwest Syria. Fighting adverse living conditions caused by the earthquake, disrepair and conflict, SARD’s Shelter rehabilitation initiatives provided adequate living conditions for 2, 541 people in 2023.
